Raymond Island is possibly the only place in Australia where you can walk 2 kilometres and be guaranteed to see many koalas in the wild.
The Raymond Island Koala Trail is enjoyed by more than 35,000 visitors each year.
It is a walking trail only – you cannot drive around the trail. Visitors are asked to leave their cars in Paynesville and travel free on the Raymond Island ferry as a foot passenger (departs every 20 minutes). The Koala Trail starts as soon as you disembark the ferry and finishes back at it. The Koala Trail is free to walk and is on public land around the township
Being such a unique and special experience, we have to be respectful and preserve it for the future. Below is your guide to visiting the Koala Trail on Raymond Island.
There are no shops on Raymond Island. Be sure you stop in Paynesville to get supplies. Please ensure you have water, food, hats, insect repellent and sunscreen.
You won't need your car, this is a walking experience. Simply make your way to the Koala Trail carpark, walk onto the free ferry and head over to Raymond Island.
Once you arrive on the Island your Koala Trail adventure begins by following the Koala Trail symbol. It is easy for all ages and abilities. See how many Koalas you can spot.
People live on Raymond Island please do not enter the resident's properties. The Koalas are wild animals. Please do not get too close, they might bite and scratch.
In 2010, a group of locals decided to offer visitors a koala trail to follow to see the koalas living on Raymond Island.
It became very popular and by 2020 there were 25,000 people walking the trail each year.
Our volunteers saw the need to preserve such an incredible experience. The Foundation has successfully sought funds from local, state, and federal governments and many projects are nearing completion, including new amenities, pathways, and signage, and more than 20,000 new seedlings planted.
We have so much more work to do and need your help!
